| We have many enquiries from members of the public
about noise affecting them, particularly neighbour noise problems,
poor sound insulation, music noise and industrial noise in the
environment.
Generally, we do not provide cost effective services to private
individuals but aim to encourage them to use the services
available from their local councils. The time for our involvement
comes when a dispute cannot be resolved and expert advice
is needed.
If you have been served with a Noise Abatement Notice or
Health & Safety Enforcement Notice, have a project needing
design advice, or simply require a quotation then please contact
us
For those who are just beginning to consider your requirements
the advice and link on the following pages should provide
a useful source of background information.
For those suffering a noise problem, we recommend that you
follow these general steps:-
- Discuss the problem - the chances are
that the person causing the problem is unaware of doing
so;
- Contact your local authority - if the
discussions do not help or the problem is not resolved the
LA has a duty to investigate any complaint;
- Start a diary - list the time of noise,
what it sounded like and what affect it had, and be careful
of exaggerating the problem;
- Try to stay calm and objective - noise
is stressful and upsetting and can be more so if it is prolonged
and those causing it are uncooperative, but letting it get
on top of you will NOT help;
- Be persistent - solving the problem will
take time particularly if court action is taken and you
may have to keep the pressure up;
- Be prepared to compromise - you may be
invited to mediation and this will involve some degree of
compromise if it is to be successful so have an idea of
what might be acceptable.
Above all research what is involved in the process of resolving
noise problems. The following link will give you a source of
general information and some further reference points.
In all cases we recommend that you contact your local authority
for further information on their local policies and services.
Their details will be in your local phone book or search the
local government
net.
